Virgilio est l’un des modèles favoris de Gloeden, photographié depuis son jeune âge pendant de longues années. Il reste gravé éternellement pour tous les amateurs de la Beauté. Il est beau, très expressif, aimant aussi, semblait-il, se faire photographier.
Nous connaissons des images iconiques de Virgilio dont cette photo reproduite ici, mais surtout la photo intitulée « Hypnos », où Virgilio tend un lys à chaque bras ou encore avec la fameuse image où il sourit malicieusement, tenant à la main, un genre de poisson volant.
C’est à Naples, chez son cousin Von Plüschow, que Gloeden apprend la base et la technique photographique, ainsi qu’auprès de Giovanni Crupi et Giuseppe Bruno, déjà photographes actifs à Taormina.
Les clichés de Gloeden sont toujours inspirés de l’art antique et ses nus dégagent une puissance érotique inédite et peu égalée à cette époque.
Très rapidement, il devient très apprécié des esthètes de son temps, qui lui commandent des clichés : Anatole France, Gabriele d’Annunzio, Oscar Wilde, Marcel Proust, Richard Strauss, Guillaume II, Edouard VII, le roi du Siam.
Plusieurs de ses photographies sont exposées et publiées dans les plus grands
magazines spécialisés et ont fait le tour du Monde.

Virgilio is one of Gloeden’s favorite models, photographed since
his young age for many years. He remains eternally engraved for all lovers of Beauty. He is beautiful, very expressive, also loved, it seemed, to be photographed.
We know iconic images of Virgilio, including this photo reproduced here, but especially the photo titled ‘Hypnos’, where Virgilio holds out a lily on each arm or even with the famous image where he smiles mischievously, holding in hand, a kind of flying fish.
It was in Naples, with his cousin Von Plüschow, that Gloeden learned the basics and photographic techniques, as well as from Giovanni Crupi and Giuseppe Bruno, already active photographers in Taormina.
Gloeden’s photographs are always inspired by ancient art and his nudes exude an erotic power that was unprecedented and unequalled at that time.
Very quickly, he became very appreciated by the aesthetes of his time, who commissioned him to take pictures: Anatole France, Gabriele d’Annunzio, Oscar Wilde, Marcel Proust, Richard Strauss, William II, Edward VII, the king of Siam.
Several of his photographs are exhibited and published in the greatest
specialized magazines and toured the world.
