Arthur Chaplin (1869-1935)

Arthur Chaplin (1869-1935)

Arthur Chaplin (1869-1935)

These watercolours by Chaplin date from 1888 and formed part of a manuscript work which contained 110 drawings, along with pieces of text. Chaplin produced the drawings when he was just 19 years old. They have never been shown or published, other than in my book Plaisirs et Debauches, Éditions Galerie Au Bonheur du Jour.
Arthur Chaplin was the son of the celebrated painter Charles Joshua Chaplin (1825-1891).
A pupil of Léon Bonnat, he is best known for his still life renditions of flowers, done in the manner of the lesser Dutch masters of the eighteenth century. His father, on the other hand, gained great favour with the aristocracy and the upper echelons of the bourgeoisie for his paintings of sumptuous, richly furnished interiors and for his nudes, languishing and ethereal.
The watercolours from Chaplin’s precious manuscript can be interpreted in different ways. What drove him might have been:
‒ a merely playful release into creativity following his last years of study of Greek and Roman mythology, which were then an important component of the Humanities;
‒ a passion for male attire, accurately rendered: the men are corseted, powdered, highly mannered and dandy-like, proud of their clothes, with a fetishist touch about the feet and boots;
‒ a homoerotic tendency: the young men are drawn with greater care, their attitudes are effeminate, while the women and older men are given a brisker treatment, their poses sometimes frankly ridiculous.
The homosexual leanings of Chaplin, already apparent in this album, became clear in 1908 and 1909, when he fell passionately in love with Illan Alvarez de Toledo, the Marquis of Casa Fuerte (1882-1962), who was a friend of D’Annunzio, Proust and Robert de Montesquiou.
Alvarez de Toledo, the object of this unfulfilled love, described Chaplin in his memoires as: ‘tall and thin. He wore heels too high, his hair was white, his face shaven, his air austere, detached from the world.’
These drawings are representative of homosexuality in Chaplin’s time, and they stand in distinct contrast to the rest of his work.
